FC Barcelona is in a massive rebuild and is having quite the summer with signings in the first team as well as the B-team. With the renewal of Messi and the potential exit of Antonie Griezmann, the club has been in the headlines for the last 24 hours. Some transfers, particularly around the B team have gone under the radar so to speak. One of them is SK Rapid Vienna’s winger Yusuf Demir.
Demir was monitored by many elite clubs, but Barcelona won the race to get him. The deal currently is a season-long loan for €500,000, with an option to buy for around €10m. He can prove to be a bargain given how talented he is. Even though he wasn’t on the team sheet for the Euros, the 18-year-old has already made his international debut. In September 2020, Demir became the youngest Austrian to score a goal in the Champions League when he scored in a qualifying match against Gent at the age of 17 years, three months, and 13 days old.
The player has 9 goals and 4 assists in the 38 games played last season, which is a goal involvement every 95 minutes. He plays on the left-wing, likes to cut inside and take shots on goal. He has also played on the right, likes to dribble past defenders, and is very quick. Demir will be mostly a part of the B team, but will also be within the dynamics of the first team. He will replace Konrad who was sold to Olympique de Marseille and give competition to Ansu Fati, and Memphis on the left.
YOUSUF DEMIR ’S HIGHLIGHTS
In the image below you can see Yusuf is surrounded by 4 defenders, and an additional one ahead of him. He dribbles past them, and winds up scoring (in the next image) on a slightly tight angle. He gives the keeper no chance to save the ball from going into the net. The three defenders between Demir and the keeper couldn’t do anything either. He’s calm and confident on the ball. In addition, this kind of maturity is rare to find in a teenager.
Another example is his vision, how he sees through the defense and finds a goal. He has 4 defenders and the goalkeeper in front of him, and the angle is very tight as well. But he sees through the gap (second image), and a great finish follows.
Yusuf Demir has already played two games for Barcelona, 45 minutes against Nastic and Girona, and has impressed the crowd.Spanish media outlet Sport reported yesterday that according to Koeman, Demir has won the battle vs. Collado for a first team spot. That’s the kind of impact the Austrian has made on the gaffer.

Barca has, in a statement on their official website, said: “Yusuf Demir is an 18-year-old Austrian who has been in the Rapid senior team for two seasons, playing 31 games and scoring six goals.
“He has also debuted for the senior national team. Demir is a top-quality left-footer who can play all across the attack, mainly on the wing or in the middle. He may be young but he already has experience of playing at the highest level and knows how to score goals. Yusuf already knows what it’s like to wear Blaugrana colors because those are the colors of the Rapid second strip. He is the second Austrian to play for the club after the great Hans Krankl.”
It was reported recently that Ronald Koeman is in love with Yusuf Demir, and thinks he can play for the first team. He said: “We are always ready for young players to come in, they are the future of the club. There are young players like Balde, Nico and Gavi and the new signing Demir who could all be great players,” he said. “You have to give them time to get used to the pace of the first team. We will see in the future which ones we will use.”
