Match Review: The Catalans won 3-0 at the Camp Nou
FC Barcelona won 3-0 against Levante at Camp Nou in La Liga on Sunday. Goals from Memphis, Luuk De Jong, and Ansu Fati were enough to keep the Catalans in the running for the title. The home side climbed up to the sixth spot in the league table with 12 points, but are still five points behind leaders Real Madrid.
Barca started with Ter Stegen in goal, Eric, Pique, Dest, and Mingueza in defence, Nico, Gavi, and Bousquets in the middle, with Coutinho, Memphis, and Luuk De Jong in the attack. The team had six La Masia players on the field in this one. Riqui Puig, Araujo, Ansu Fati, and Yusuf Demir also got minutes late in the second half.
The home side started on the front foot, playing attacking football, as pressure is building on Ronald Koeman who has an uncertain future. The Dutchman has been suspended for two league games following his red card against Cadiz three days ago. Assistant coach Alfred Schreuder was on the sidelines for this game. The first goal came in the seventh minute with Memphis scoring from a penalty giving Barcelona an early lead.
Just ten minutes later, Dest playing on the left assisted Luuk De Jong who finished it off, getting his first goal for the team. The Sevilla loanee finished it off well to make it 2-0 for the home side. There were many chances in the first half, with Gavi getting close, Pique almost scoring to make it three. But the team could not score the third goal in the first half. Oscar Mingueza isn’t the most attacking right-back, but he had a great game last night.
This is the Barcelona the fans wanted for the longest time, and we finally got it. Gavi got in some great areas, getting in behind the defence, looking for spaces as well. He played like a mature player, although he’s just 17 years old. Riqui Puig, Nico Gonzales, and Gavi were on the pitch at the same time for a few minutes in the second half and a great trio. Ansu Fati was eventually introduced on the pitch getting the crowd on their feet.
The 35,000 attendees were thrilled to finally see Ansu Fati play. And it was like he never left in the first place. He was full throttle right from the off. The number 10 was dribbling past the defenders, trying to shoot, and showed hunger. The goal he scored came in some style as he had Puig and Demir on either side and could pass it to them. He had two defenders in front of him, and bravely took the shot that was unstoppable by the goalkeeper.
There was no shred of doubt in himself and fired towards goal, busting the net from our new number 10. He went to the stands, gave the club doctor a hug. The players picked him up and celebrated like mad. This is truly a new beginning for the club, ushering into the new era with a great young squad. With Gavi, Nico, Araujo, Dest, Pedri, Demir, and Ansu Fati, all of them are ready to be starters for the first team.
Barcelona has a game in hand and they face Atletico de Madrid next weekend who are two points ahead of the team. But before that, there’s a Champions League away game against Benfica on Wednesday.
