Editorial Review, Messi Speaks, Anxious fans, Bartomeu in Dilemma

7 min read

Leo Messi has informed the club by burofax that he wishes to leave Barça immediately. He has interpreted that the clause that allows him to terminate his contract remains in force. But the club reminded him that this clause expired on June 10th and that he cannot leave for free. It’s all clear now Messi is all set to fight with Bartomeu alone. This news has taken the whole world by storm. Sources suggest he has already considered City, but fans people are also hoping if Bartomeu resigns, he might stay.

In this editorial review, our editors expressed their opinion on this matter.

Crossing the line

Leo Messi’s potential departure is the absolute limit of the management failures at Barcelona, which have been on display for quite some time now. It seems that Suarez’s possible departure mismanagement has made things tick. Messi has a good 2-3 seasons at the very top level and could walk into any big club, making them favourites in every competition.

Messi’s current stance seems to be an attempt to force the board out since the Argentine has profound feelings for this club, the home that made him what he is today.

The homegrown legend who spent 17 years at the club and was a part of many different Barcelona sides which included players from Ronaldinho to Xavi, Iniesta, Neymar, Suarez, has been an all-time fan favourite and is probably using everything at his personal disposal to bring in a better board to make his final years at home sweeter, if this attempt comes through, the submission of the board would mean history made as the Argentine saves the club yet again, this time off the pitch.

However, if Messi does leave, it would be the worst for Barcelona fans, but there would be no hatred. No Cule would be able to hate him after all he’s given to the club. With his possible departure, maybe Barca gets a chance to rebuild from other promising talents in the club, most likely under a new board, starting from a fresh page in the club’s colourful history.

Leo Messi would still be Leo Messi, in a sense he would make the most of his new team, as he would have a competent team for the first time in many seasons. Silverware will follow Messi for sure, so there can technically be a win-win situation for both parties.

For a club that calls itself

“Mes Que un club”, this board has made it an absolute disaster.

What most fans didn’t expect to see in a lifetime, Blaugrana fans saw in the 2010s. It began with Samba duo Ronaldinho and Deco at the beginning of the ‘Pep’ era. It continued with the change in the board with ‘Pep’ Guardiola, Dani Alves, ‘Lucho’ Enrique and Andres Iniesta. If this wasn’t bad enough, they seem to have a collective agreement to never set foot near the club, with ‘Pep’ famously saying that he has moved far away to the US and the board should never bother him again.

If speculations infamous media centres are to be believed Suarez (who’s contract is rumoured to be rescinded if he doesn’t move) and his close buddy Messi are the next in line to march out. The latter had stated his displeasure early in the season stating the lack of competitiveness of the side and the change in coach, has been quite vocal with new manager Koeman saying that he’s “more out than in”. After yet another outrage where his private conversation with the hierarchy was leaked, he has decided enough is enough.

While Bartomeu and the board are however to react to the press officially, the relationship has broken beyond repair after he has formally faxed to release him from his contract. Although most aficionados would have expected a Messi less future, how this happens (which might include a badly fought court case) the club seems to have come to a stage of no return.

Ever since the news of Messi sending a fax to Barcelona offices regarding his departure has been revealed, Barcelona fans all around the world are devastated. The football world has cracked open, and it’s complete chaos. Supporters at Barcelona city are marching towards the Camp Nou to protest against the President Bartomeu who is definitely panicked and is forced to resign.

If Messi joins another club, then it will be the biggest loss for Barcelona. Their most coveted player, the myth, the legend will end his tenure in a very unpleasant way. It will be
an indelible mark on his legacy at the club whom he took to great heights.

The board has to resign even if Messi doesn’t leave. The destruction was initiated
since the day Sandro Rosell was appointed as President and after that Bartomeu took over the reins. They have blood in their hands. If the GREATEST PLAYER OF ALL TIME leaves the club in this manner, then it’s a shame to be a president of the club.

For Messi, his aim should be to either reunite with Pep and lead the Sheikh Mansour’s City for their UCL glory or join the Parisiens and make an unstoppable attacking force with his mates Di Maria and Neymar alongside Mbappe. Another team who can afford Leo’s wages are Manchester United. The upcoming President have to fix the broken ship of Barcelona slowly and steadily. The impact is massive. The team will be affected for a longer timeline, but the fans have to keep patience.

“Messi wanting to leave Barcelona” is indeed a statement which Marca explains as something which cannot be written without exclamations. If it happens, then this event alone should mark the end of Bartomeu reign as Barcelona’s president without even considering the continuous on-field embarrassments and off-field scandals we’ve faced under this regime. Even though the Socis of the have been very inactive in the past few years, I do expect the majority of them to finally turn up and sign the vote of no confidence over ‘unacceptable management.’

Barca’s image as ‘more than a club’ is something which the club has built for more than a century now. Thanks to this board’s incompetence and relentless sickening decisions that it doesn’t seem to exist anymore. Bartomeu leaving the club after losing a vote of no confidence would be an embarrassing end to his time at the club which might force him to resign before the Socis sign it. Either way, Bartomeu days are numbered.

Messi’s departure has been brewing for a while now. And it had been whispered about since the devastating 4-0 defeat at Anfield last year. Several Reliable Local News outlets in Catalunya report that Barcelona will remain firm in saying Messi has a 700 million release clause. If true, then the final chapter of the long historical era at Barcelona would be Lionel Messi facing his own club in court and the saddest part of all is it wouldn’t surprise even a single soul.

It is not just about what happened in Lisbon or back in Anfield or Roma; things have been very wrong with this club ever since Rosell took over and later Bartomeu. From lack of opportunities for players coming from our own academy to relentless sum of money spend on transfer every freaking year, things have been so wrong at football club Barcelona. Several fans, as well as even Messi, has said this before about how things are pretty messed up.

Indeed, after that 8-2 humiliation, change was inevitable. But, you can see how the club is seeking every other change except for the replacement of the Presidency. It's almost as if Bartomeu is shifting the blame entirely on the players.

Messi wants to win at Barcelona, he wants to end his career, and you can see his effort every year. But, it’s useless if the end product is nil. It makes no sense if the club doesn’t help in it. Messi shouldn’t waste his final years at a club where even after all this, the definite change can’t be made. The only way Messi stays now is, Bartomeu leaving.

Now, it’s up to him if he wants to be the hero by backing down or would rather keep his place and downgrade this club’s glory by letting go of Messi.

Started with a napkin paper and ending in Burofax, What a ride it has been!
