FC Barcelona Femení won their most challenging game of the season, 5-1 against a motivated Real Sociedad Femenino. The scoreline doesn’t highlight the game’s close intensity where Barca worked hard to avoid a second equalizer, the third goal eased the nerves, and Arroyo’s team fell apart. The goal scorers were Leila Ouahabi, Alexia Putellas, OG, Marta Torrejon, and Mariona Caldentey. Nahikari Garcia scored for Real Sociedad, breaking Barca’s record of clean sheets since January 2020.
A rusty steamroller… still smashes its opponents.
After two weeks without playing, Barça came back to de Johan. The lack of playtime was easily noticeable, as Barça missed passes and was full of imprecisions. It was as if the generally well-oiled steamroller had some rust in its engine. Whereas Barça mostly controlled the first half, the strikers missed clear chances – as it is way too usual – which made the team (and supporters) suffer much more needed. In fact, Real Sociedad’s goal came from a simple and total lack of attention: N. Eizaguirre – the smartest of them all – quickly served a foul that ended with Nahikari’s tying goal. A goal that ended the record of minutes without conceding.
In the second half, Barça seemed to be mentally dispersed, and the imprecisions were numerous and worrying. Nonetheless, even in these situations, Barça manages to impose and break down its rivals. After Alexias’ 121 goal for Barça – and the changes made… a bit late for me- the machine started to work a bit better, and the goals started to downpour. Perhaps, too much reward from what was seen on the pitch. Real Sociedad played a great game without closing themselves in their area, a team to watch, and a clear contender for the second and third position of Primera Iberdrola.
Laia’s Player of the Match: Andrea Pereira. In a team in which Mapi generally recognizes her defensive skills, Pereira’s work is often overlooked. She saved us countless times, not only today but along the past season too. In my opinion, right now, Pereira is the most reliable defender we have, and I would not trade her for anyone. Pereira, always on my team.
Tight match, but in the end, it’s Barça’s game.
After not playing for ten days, FC Barcelona lacked rhythm against a very physically prepared Real Sociedad, yet they still managed to win. Sociedad’s game plan worked well enough to hold off this Barcelona. Natalia Arroyo’s squad ended Barça’s streak of not conceding, which lasted 962 minutes. They pressured high on the pitch, made the Blaugranas lose control in the midfield, and did well on the attack, but after 75 minutes, Real had no chance against the home team.
While Lluís Cortés’ team created many goal-scoring opportunities in the first half, which ultimately weren’t converted, it seems they found their scoring foot in the last 15 minutes of the game. They scored three goals in just seven minutes and turned what was a very close match into a thrashing. Barcelona just can’t lose this season even when it seems possible and even less when they play in the Johan Cruyff stadium.
Natalie’s Player of the Match: Mariona was the mastermind behind two goals and was a constant nuisance for the Basque team’s defence. Caldentey made some great plays to make her way right through the other team’s backline. She also was making big efforts running back to help her teammates with defending. While quite underrated, Andrea Pereira was also another player, one of Barça’s best players and one of the best defenders in Europe past year. She was quick to react and even tried out being a false 9 in the last minutes of the game; it’s the effort that counts.
Scoring goals for fun
The victory continues the perfect start to the team season and sees another thrilling match win by Lluís Cortés’ side. They conceded their first goal in the league but won quite comfortably. In the first 15 minutes, Barça produced many chances, and none of those chances were converted. The first goal finally came in the 16th minute by Leila Ouahabi. Great to see Leila scoring after a while. Things got intense for the team when Nahikari scored the equalizer. This is the first goal conceded by Barça Femeni in 962 playing minutes. It is a team record. Barça edged ahead just before the half time with an OG.
The second half was more dynamic. The team played better and created more chances. Alexia, who has been fantastic this season, scored her 121st goal in the 77th minute, making it 3-1. Marta and Mariona scored consecutively in the 83rd in the 85th minute making at 5-1 for the team. It wasn’t their finest performance considering how good the team has been this season, but they got a deserving win.
Afreen’s Player of the Match: Alexia Putellas She scored her 121st goal as a Barça player today and is closing on to become the top scorer in the history of Barça Femeni. We’ve got a balanced squad rotation in pure Cortés fashion. Without compromising any consistency, the squad depth enables Cortes to rotate players. The squad depth is unmatched. It helps them keep the pressure on till the end of the match.
