The Tenure of Bartomeu as the president of FC Barcelona, is coming to an end in 2021. His reign as the president has been termed as devastating by many Barcelona fans. Be it bringing expensive players who didn’t perform as expected or the scandal of hiring I3 ventures to publish bad about his players to clean his reputation, it is sure his term couldn’t be said successful. Making things worse, His recent swap deal of exchanging 23-year-old Arthur Melo with 30-Year-old Miralem Pjanic to bring money has made Barcelona fans angrier. Looking at the Condition, it is highly unlikely that he will continue as the president after 2021, so who are the ideal contenders to replace him?
Bartomeu took over the presidency from Sandro Russel in 2014 after the latter resigned from his post, making that time vice president Bartemeo the new president of the club. He again won the next election in 2015, beating Former Club President Joan Laporta. After five years of Bartemeo’s presidency, the culers are not satisfied by his management. It is speculated that even players of the team and board members don’t believe in his ideas anymore. Fans also protested against him, in a match against Eibar in February by waving handkerchiefs and demanding his resignation. It seems we will see a new president in FC Barcelona in the next presidential elections, which are scheduled to be held in 2021.
Who can vote?
Not everyone can vote in the elections. You have to be a socio(a member of the club) to vote in the election. A Socio should be at least 18 years old and should have been a member of the club for at least one year. The voting would be held in Barcelona so, the socio must be present in City for the vote.
As of now, two significant candidates Victor Font and Joan Laporta, have confirmed their will to participate in the elections. Victor Font, a successful businessman and CEO of Consulting Company Delta partners Group is the first candidate to announce his nomination. He has presented his project “Sí al futur” (meaning yes to the future), aiming to build a new Barca that focuses more on the youth “La Masia.” He has openly stated his will to bring Club legend Xavi Hernandez as the Head Coach of Barca.HE believes Xavi as a coach is the central pillar for his project which will help in easing the transition of Barcelona after Lionel Messi retires.
“I’m in tune with Xavi about the project, and personally, I love talking to him about football, and I hope he can lead our footballing project.”
– Victor Font
Joan Laporta, a Spanish politician and former Barcelona president (2003-10), has been one of the most successful presidents of all Barcelona history. Under his management, Barca became the first team ever to win sextuple, winning all the trophies that came their way. Laporta came to power in 2003, replacing Joan Gaspart after claiming to bring superstar David Beckham in Fc Barcelona. However, he didn’t manage to bring him as the player signed to their Rival club Real Madrid, though he did manage to bring Ronaldinho who did wonders for Barcelona winning them the La Liga title in his 2nd season. Throughout his Presidency, Laporta supported homegrown players Like Xavi, Iniesta, Carles Puyol, and Victor Valdes, who later became the Club Legends. He was the one who promoted Pep Guardiola from Barcelona B to the first team. No Doubt it turned out to be fruitful for FC Barcelona as under Pep Guardiola They Managed to win a total of 14 trophies in four years. This time also he favors Pep to return as a coach.
“I would very much like Guardiola to come back but now he is at City and it is a decision that Pep should take. He is a benchmark for Barcelona and many Catalans would like him to train Barca again.”
– Joan Laporta
After his seven years Tenure, He again tried to run for the presidency in 2015 but lost to Josep Maria Bartomeu as the latter recorded 54.63% votes in his favor. But still, Due to his previous quality run as the president, he would be one of the favorites to win the elections in 2021.
It is evident that both the candidates would be tempted to bring Johan Cyruff’s ‘Total football philosophy’ back to the club, which has been faded away in recent times. In past years, The club has somewhat lost trust in his youth and followed Galacticos’ policy, i.e., making big signings to fill the spots rather than promoting La Masia Talents. As the Data Shows, Barcelona Has spent 383 million more than Its rivals Real Madrid to build the team since 2014. This big spent of money has brought the club into financial troubles. The elected president will face a hard time solving the financial crisis and bring back the club to stability. After the elections, It would be interesting to see how the management deal with this economic instability and the aging squad as they hope from their club to come back in winning ways as soon as possible.
